Who we are

Fight Against Antimicrobial Resistance (FAAMR) is an organization that seeks to halt the spread of antimicrobial resistance in communities by increasing awareness through education.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat due to its association with increased morbidity, mortality, and health care costs. According to the World health Organization, by 2050 10 million deaths and an economic loss of USD 100 trillion may occur annually as the result of AMR. Therefore, it is imperative that AMR is stopped at its tracks. As part of the World Health Organization Global Action Plan objectives, increasing knowledge and awareness of AMR in the public may go a long way in curbing the threat of AMR. This organization leverages this objective to provide the communities with tools to fight against antimicrobial resistance through education and training.

About Founder and President

Dr. Margaret Lubwama is a medical microbiologist and lecturer with Makerere University College of Health Sciences at the Department of Medical Microbiology. Her main research focuses on understanding the resistance mechanisms of bacteria. She also sits in the infection prevention and control and antimicrobial stewardship committees at the Uganda Cancer Institute where much of her work on antimicrobial resistance has been carried out. Due to the scarcity of new treatment options for resistant bacteria, Dr Lubwama also studies about antimicrobial activity of herbs against resistant bacteria. The goal is to determine if the herbs used in Africa are an option for treatment of resistant organisms. As a mentor and lecturer, Dr Lubwama is passionate about teaching the community about ways to prevent antimicrobial resistance with the hope that the community will embrace their role in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
